Chicago has broken the ground at the New Concount D at O’Hare International Airport with Aecom Hunt Clayco Bowa, which is responsible for the at -risk construction of the $ 1.3 billion project, which includes $ 300 million in infrastructure work.

The project, a part of Ordnext, a project of expansion and modernization of the terminal area of $ 8.5 million O’Hare 21 launched in 2018, is designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), in collaboration with Ross Barney Architects, Juan Gabriel Moreno Architects (JGMA) and Ap.

The new Concourse D is scheduled to have 19 doors designed for narrow body planes, with the flexibility of adapting 18 of these doors to nine larger doors that can house large aircraft. The facilities would include more than 20,000 square meters of living room space, 30,000 square meters of commercial space and a children’s play area of 450 square meters.

The plan also includes about $ 300 million in infrastructure improvements, such as a new central refrigeration facility located in the center of the airport, along with the pavement and useful work.

“These improvements will minimize the taxi of aircraft, optimize the doors and maintain travelers who move to their world destinations,” said Chicago aviation curator Michael McMurray, during an innovative August 18.

A 40 -foot atrium that connects the three levels of the building is scheduled for the northern end of the 590,000 square meters room and would have an oculus that allowed day to light at the following levels. CONCOUNSE D It is also planned to have structural columns similar to the tree, a look at the Apple Orchard that was once at the airport site.

The additional projects to be carried out through Ordnext include the demolition of Terminal 2 and replaced by the O’Hare Global Terminal, the construction of a second Concourse satellite, a 24-door competition and the construction of a new underground tunnel to connect passengers, airport employees and baggage operations between the expanded facilities.

The High T3 project of $ 300 million, aimed at introducing new comforts, safety screening areas and accessibility for disabled passengers at terminal 3 of 85 doors, is also part of the general plan. As ERR reported above, the risk construction manager is COT3, a joint company Clark Construction Group LLC and We O’Neil Construction Co. The construction of high elevat3 is completed by 2027.

The updates to Terminal 5 are also underway and include an expected oriental extension of 10 doors and a new six -storey parking garage.

The place preparation for Concourse D began by 2023, including the construction of temporary taxis, a new road separated by Grau, the reconfiguration of the B court and three temporary doors added to Concrourse C, which opened last year. Important construction began in July, from the demolition of existing taxi roads. About six months of excavation is expected, and the stage is expected for vertical construction to begin in the spring of 2026.

“With the improvements we are making at Concourse d Alone, we are generating more than 3,800 construction jobs that create a wavy effect on the entire Chicago community,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson.

According to the city, O’Hare had more than 8 million passengers in June 2025, the highest total of June in its 70 years of history and the second most interesting month, according to the city.

While Ordnext launched in 2018, McMurray said that planning has been for a long time.

“The airport planning is not for the following year, it is for the next generation,” he said. “If you do not plan to move forward, you are falling behind the curve.”

Construction offer opportunities for Concourse D.
