Construction work has resumed on a $2 billion hotel renovation in New York City nearly a week after a craftsman fell to his death and a Stop Work Order was issued by New York City Department of Buildings (DOB). Boston-based Suffolk Construction Co. is the project’s general contractor.
Emergency responders were called around 9:30 a.m. Jan. 2 to the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Manhattan where Elie William, 45, was pronounced dead at the scene. According to an initial investigation by the Date of birth William was assisting a licensed master electrician in the walkway area between the third floor and fourth floor ballroom when he fell.

Infractions that would lead to financial penalties are pending the ongoing investigation.
House in the Waldorf Astoria since its construction in 1931, the building closed in 2017 as ownership changed, with plans to redevelop the structure into a hybrid commercial and residential space with 375 condos and 377 hotel rooms, including 50,000 square feet of commercial and entertainment space.
Suffolk Construction, which was ranked 25th on ENR’s 2024 Top 400 Contractors list, won all three phases of the project. A spokesman for the contractor deferred comment to the project owner.
