Work in the Portland area has focused on rehabilitating roads and bridges to “maintain and maximize the efficiency of its transportation system,” Cote says, noting that funding from the Jobs and Infrastructure Investments Act and additional toll revenue “has been expanded to include more robust transportation infrastructure.”

As of January, more than $2 billion in state law funding was allocated for Maine, with more than 218 projects identified targeting 355 bridges and more than 1,284 miles of highways across the region.

“The Maine Department of Transportation and other regional agencies will look to run infrastructure improvement projects concurrently,” says Cote.
HNTB helped the Maine Turnpike Authority complete the Portland Area Expansion Program, “the most extensive capital program in the agency’s history,” says Cote.

The use of innovative techniques will be critical to balancing the region’s resources, he says. “Maintaining comprehensive planning to ensure there are materials and skilled labor to deliver is essential,” he adds.
