As Gateway holds a 16 million dollars Hudson tunnel project on the court

The crews spread over five construction sites are working to add a couple of tunnels under the Hudson River and nine kilometers of new passenger railway line to provide a more reliable connectivity between New Jersey and New York. All this, a total of 10 projects will represent the Hudson Tunnel project of $ 16 million.

“We are committed to delivering this project within the scope, in time and budget,” said Gateway Development Commission, Thomas Takegast, told journalists on a press tour that set the anniversary of one year of his full financing agreement with the Federal Traffic Administration.

Hudson Yards Casing of Concrete 3, the first project that broke the ground in November 2023, reached 56% of completion earlier this month, says Leroy Antoine, the principal manager of Capital Construction for Amtrak, managing the design and construction of the project of $ 692 million. The crews have excavated about 50,000 tonnes of soil and removed more than 1.7 million gallons of water. To place the roof, “we plan to put sand inside the tunnel after pouring the bottom and walls,” says Antoine. “The sand will serve in a fundamental way so that we put the formwork for the roof on top.” Once the upper slab has been placed, the sand is removed from the tunnel casing and placed on the top of the casing as a filling.

Cut by the rock

Directed by Schiavone Lane Dragados JV, the $ 465.6 million palisades project will use two TBMs about 29 feet of day equipped with hard rock cutters to excavate the first mile of the parallel tunnels up to 250 feet below the formation of the palissades.

To cope with the overload of the floor at the planned TBM entry point, the crews will build more than 90 piles of concrete drying anchored with 5 -foot rock sockets, says Kurt Paxon, Schiavone’s general superintendent. “From here, we will pierce and explode 40 feet on the rock and, when the two TBMs are here and gather, they will actually penetrate the face of the rock.”

The push frames will provide a platform to mount the 350 -foot TBM segments as they penetrate the rock. The machines will also align the tunnel with a concrete and waterproof membrane to create an interior diameter of 25 feet, 2 a. TBMS will be launched next year to excavate about 1,250 Rock Cu a day, with a planned completion in the fourth quarter of 2027. The construction also includes an axis on the west shore of the Hudson river in Weehawken TBM on purpose to manage specific cutting conditions under the river.

Preparing the riverbed

Returning to the dry land along the banks of Manhattan, the crews have begun to mobilize in the largest contract to date, the Manhattan tunnel project of $ 1.2 million, which will build the portion of approximately 700 feet in length that connects the Hudson concrete carcass in the river tunnel. This section consists of penetrating the Manhattan wall that returns the waters of Hudson to the filling of the twentieth century, which delimits the western edge of the city along the 12th avenue.

The tutor of the contractor Frontier-Kemper Perini JV will improve the soil, to “put casings on the ground and freeze pipes that will circulate cold brine … to freeze the ground and create a hardened mass,” says Benjamin Engle, responsible for Gateway’s senior programs for program planning. “At this point, they will begin to excavate with a digger shield.”

The obstructions will be eliminated, including the West Side road steel foundation, which was abandoned in its place. The crews will be broadcast with low endurance concrete to create a stable environment so that the Hudson River TBM can chew before reaching a 130 -foot access axis built to remove the TBM and create a future tunnel ventilation axis.

Two more projects were announced by the beginning of this year, including the 7,250 feet tunnel section in length under the Hudson riverbed. Gateway provides for prizes in the coming months.

Tregast is confident that, despite the change of administration from the complete financing of the project, the tunnel will be delivered in time and budget. “We have contacted Trump’s administration and [it has] has been very supportive [of the Gateway Program]”, He says.” They know the importance of the project. “
