At 12,800 square feet, this $9 million, two-story, solid wood building houses city services and includes a single-story municipal courthouse and city council chambers. The original two-story facility on this 1.1-acre site was demolished after the design team determined it would be more cost-effective to replace the building rather than renovate it.
The modernized community spaces honor the local natural resources and historic character of the area with a public square that will support festivals and community activities. Major site work included filling and grading to tie in existing city streets and utilities.
A combination of materials, specifically local brick and timber, pays homage to historic downtown Monmouth and celebrates the local timber industry. Steel, glass and solar canopies on the facade combine indoor and outdoor spaces, providing abundant natural light for city employees and community members.
Keeping the project within GMP required several strategies. One such method was the implementation of a mechanical design and construction package. HVAC subcontractor Hermanson took the lead with a design-aid approach, selecting more cost-effective equipment. Together with the mechanical engineer of record, the team confirmed that the new system met the required design parameters and established a new price per square foot, which significantly contributed to the project staying within budget.
