This addition and renovation effort at L3Harris’ Fort Wayne facility supports end-to-end manufacturing and testing of advanced equipment for the space communications and exploration industries.
Above the production floor, an open office environment encourages collaboration and maintains visual connection to the activity below. The lower level includes a 26,000 square meter engineering center with direct access to the construction space.
The renovation and expansion of a highly secure operational facility presented multiple challenges. Teams planned incremental work, navigated limited roof space, and integrated new infrastructure with old systems. System outages and transitions were scheduled to the minute, preserving the integrity of the lab’s sensitive operations.
With the help of 3D modeling, the team coordinated dense systems within restricted spaces, enabling early crash detection and informed field installation. To maintain a clean construction environment, the contractor implemented specialized cleaning protocols throughout the project, especially when new construction tied into active areas of the lab. An extra effort was made to protect air quality.
