Bam Nuttall beats Network Rail’s construction spend again

Network Rail paid Bam Nuttall more money than any other construction company last year, according to new figures.

The infrastructure operator spent more than £320m with the Dutch-owned civils specialist in the year to April 2023.

Colas Rail received the second most, with just over £300m in the period, the supplier table published by Network Rail showed.

J Murphy & Sons, Balfour Beatty Rail, AtkinsRéalis and Amey were among the top 10 construction firms for the value of work with the infrastructure body, along with Amalgamated Construction, Octavius ​​Infrastructure and Story Contracting.

Atkins made a second appearance as part of the East West Rail Phase 2 Alliance, which also contains Laing O’Rourke and VolkerRail.

Energy supplier EDF Energy topped the wider supplier table, charging Network Rail more than half a million pounds last year. Train and signaling specialist Siemens Mobility was just behind.

Workforce provider Alexander Mann Solutions also appeared in the top 20, receiving more than £100m from the infrastructure body.

Overall, Network Rail’s investment with its top 20 suppliers grew from £3.5bn in 2021/22 to £3.8bn last year.

This is the second consecutive year that Bam Nuttall has topped the construction expenditure table.
