The construction of the 25,000 -square -meter aerie restaurant on the top of the Colorado copper mountain required an unconventional approach to the construction of 11,207 feet. The site is designed to be open throughout the year for consistent income for the complex and the installation is attached to the American Eagle Gondola, which results on its second floor.
The ski resort had stopped the project during the pandemic, and the work was only 10% complete when Hyder Construction took over the leadership of the two-story lodge of $ 26 million in 2022. The project executive, Doug Thompson, says that the contractor made the hard call to work through the ski season to achieve it as quickly as possible.

“The hardest thing is to always put the crews on the site, but the gondola made it feasible due to its proximity,” he says.

Incorporated innovative techniques and design elements that involved a myriad of environmental considerations. Work near the gondola required careful coordination and activities were strictly controlled. The design of the building included parameters to avoid conflicts with the operation of Gondola and Hyder worked with the lift operator to ensure everyone’s safety. Snowcat tools and equipment was allowed once a day, and Thompson says he had a high level of planning to find out what was absolutely necessary for every trip on the mountain. Snowcats could only transport the deposits of 5 gardens, so that minimizing construction waste was essential. A full -time employee inspected and resorted to each load to prevent excess material.
The Aerie is designed to improve the multipurpose capacities of Copper Mountain and includes a formal dining room, a bar and a living room.

The aerie kitchen team includes a biodigester to turn organic waste into gray waters instead of sending it to landfills. The first of its type in Colorado, the system is designed to function efficiently at high elevation, allowing staff to attend more people in a smaller space and establish a new standard for mountain facilities. The project was delivered to the programming and the budget in October 2023.
