The crews are wrapping the first phase of the Bridge District, a 757 units multi -family project located on the southern shore of the Anacostia river near the foot of the Frederick Douglass bridge in Washington, DC. Three connected but different towers contain different levels of finishes, from the top quality rate to the market to the affordable housing.
The project began construction in 2023, with ZGF Architects as Hitt’s designer and hiring as a contractor. Redbrick is the developer. “This building has very high sustainability goals, including -Zero carbon certification of future life and also Leed Platinum,” says Rachel Williams, a ZGF sustainability specialist. “A huge appearance of the sustainability of this building is the reduction of the carbon embodied in the concrete.”
The project is based on methods used for the Amazon HQ2 nearby project, which also designed ZGF and which achieved a 25% reduction in carbon embodied in concrete. For the Bridge district, Williams says the team could increase to a 33% concrete reduction and 37% lower than the entire project.
Williams says that the project “will propel the region towards a low carbon concrete. Washington, DC, is a specific city, so more concrewe reductions can improve, and I think it only puts the stage for other suppliers that may not have so much experience to learn from us and to use -in their next project.”
