Those interested in the Newhouse Replacement Project on the Washington State Capitol Campus in Olympia, Washington, celebrated the completion of the project in January. The existing Newhouse Building, which has been part of the state campus since 1934, is being replaced as a result of various safety and seismic issues. The teams painted the final steel beam white and signed their names for posterity. A small evergreen leaflet and the American flag were attached to the beam as it was set. The Miller Hull Partnership LLP designed the project for the Washington State Department of Business Services. Hoffman Construction worked as a general contractor, Lund Opsahl LLC as a structural engineer and Reid Middleton as a civil engineer.

when DPR construction VDC project engineer Hannah Mahfood (pictured far left) found an opportunity and space to create a garden in University of California, San Diego Health Hillcrest Redevelopment Phase 1 job site, he built four 4-foot-by-4-foot-by-2-foot pallet garden beds with labor foreman Curtis Perkins (pictured near left) to create what is now called Authenticity Garden.
This on-site garden has become a place where DPR colleagues and partners can connect over shared interests.
Together, the team is growing an assortment of vegetables, fruits and herbs, including cherry tomatoes, Chinese eggplants, zucchini, celery, strawberries, peppers, mint, rosemary and more. Mahfood says he hopes the garden can inspire other workplaces.
“Learning about colleagues beyond their day-to-day work creates these valuable connections that bring us all closer together as a team,” she says.
The first phase of Hillcrest’s redevelopment includes the McGrath Outpatient Pavilion, a six-story, 250,000-square-foot state-of-the-art medical facility that will house key clinical programs to address the region’s growing demand for specialized diagnostic services, treatment and surgery, especially in the treatment of cancer. The Pavilion is scheduled to open in 2025.
