Chetumal., QR – Water has been restored to the city of Chetumal after a construction accident on Wednesday. On Thursday, the Water and Sewer Commission (CAPA) reported the successful repair of a 36-inch punctured line that left streets flooded.
A backhoe operator accidentally punctured the city’s main line Wednesday afternoon while working in the area. The incident happened next to a busy road in Chetumal which caused traffic chaos.
Cars were almost at a standstill in a line several kilometers long due to the flood of high-pressure water and the subsequent repair that required heavy machinery.

In a statement on Thursday, the Drinking Water and Sewage Commission (CAPA) reported on the success of the repair and the gradual return of pressure.
The company reported working day and night to replace the badly damaged section of the 36-inch pipe.
“With heavy machinery, motor pumps and personnel working day and night, in less than 24 hours the leak was repaired and water was pumped from the Ucum catchment area,” CAPA reported.

“This pressurization process must be done carefully to expel the air accumulated in the pipe, achieve the proper water flow and make the necessary tests to ensure the arrival of the vital liquid in the city,” they said.
Due to the lengthy repressurization process, the water is expected to be fully restored by Friday.
