You are about to finish -you are in the shopping center on Denver 16 Street. What are some lessons learned from this project?
The hardest challenge was like launching all the work and maintaining all these operating businesses. We had a plan and this plan had to change, as the plans do, to make it more efficient for the contractors. We started everything, replaced all the underground utilities, poured a new slab, new granite flooring, landscaping, etc. Although there was a lot of planning that took advantage of all this, the hardest challenge was to maintain all the business open and allow the road traffic needed to support these businesses. We had some great leaders in this regard [PCL] Team and hats to get everyone to focus on the work we are dealing with [despite the high-profile and pedestrian-heavy nature of the project]. It was a long and difficult process for some of the business, but the end result is fantastic, and we receive positive comments from the public and some business owners.

What does PCL do to navigate the fees threats and possible supply chain problems?
The rates were certainly concern a few months ago, and this sucked a large amount of oxygen in all the conversations we had internally and with our customers, subs and vendors. One good thing that came out of the pandemic was that we had much smarter and more strategic in our hiring strategies because there were so many interruptions in the supply chain around the world. So, when talked about rates, we began to implement some of these backup strategies and plans. Today I feel much more confident than a few months ago we are reaching a place of more security.
How do you handle the challenges of the workforce?
Right now it is manageable, but the concern is that if the work continues to grow, and especially with what happens on the border, this could restrict things because much of our labor force in any field we operate, including Colorado, are immigrants. Personally, I think we need to solve our immigration program to set up a system that allows us to ensure people who want to come here and help us set up; I am optimistic that we can reach it.
“Our great family culture is the one that has been here for 30 years.”
—Promacina, President, USA USA, PCL Construction
We do a little work, so it means that we hire workers and carpenters ourselves, especially for concrete and massive wood projects. We lean on these crews to help us grow and bring their friends and family to join the PCL family. We also do a lot of work with learning programs to help young people see the great opportunities existing in our industry. So we attack it from a few different angles.
One thing we are so proud of is to put us on the best lists to work with Denver Business Journal and Fortune Magazine. It talks about our culture, of which our employee ownership model is the bed. Our great family culture has been here for 30 years. Over time, our employees have given more than $ 20 million to Mile High United Way; We built its headquarters and we are building a new project for them. We understand the luck of being part of such a large company, and the level of commitment we have with Mile High United Way, Habitat for Humanity, the Rockies Food Bank and other programs is the way we return.
What is on the PCL horizon?
We feel hopeful that manufacturing will continue to grow. We have a center of manufacture excellence that works with our existing business units in all the United States to achieve more manufacturing work and once things are installed [with regard to tariffs] We think that there will be more information about products. Some of our clients expect to see where everything lands before deciding where to deploy their capital, either by expanding or developing new manufacturing facilities.
