A research team of academics and industry professionals launched a new tool to help businesses maximize the value of their digital transformation in capital projects.

The Digital Transformation Roadmap Tool, available through the Construction Industry Institute, an industry R&D think tank based at the University of Texas at Austin, collects data searchable from nearly 200 surveys, case studies and interviews with companies making digital investments. The tool aims to help users decipher their best path to adopting technologies such as AI and 5D BIM.

The majority of survey respondents “said they were in the middle of their digital transformation,” said Erin Jones, study team vice president and project design technology and data supervisor at ExxonMobil, in present the results at the CII San Diego conference last month. “The most technologically advanced organizations have said they have built a unique roadmap for the business drivers and challenges they are addressing.”

attendees also heard the latest research on AI and other technologies, along with ways to optimize advanced work packages for larger projects. One such research paper examined the impact of a project team’s culture on project performance. The study examined the impact of deploying a clearly outlined vision for collaboration and communication from day one with a multinational team building a $2 billion+ chemical production plant for ExxonMobil. Thom Sinkovic, its senior executive advisor for global projects, said aligning cultural behaviors increased safety performance, schedule adherence and the deployment of cutting-edge technologies.
