Eric Wright Construction has secured a £30m job to deliver affordable homes in Lancaster’s canal district.
The three-year contract will see the company build 139 homes on the 0.9 hectare site at Coopers Fields, which comprises the upper and lower car parks at St Leonard’s Gate.
It will be the first phase of the regeneration of the Canal Quarter area, which stretches from St Leonard’s Gate to Quarry Road, which is expected to provide a total of 580 homes, two public squares and more than 75,000 sq ft of retail space .
Eric Wright Construction commercial director Phil Brown said the company’s local track record and strong environmental credentials made it a good fit for the job.
“We have a long-standing relationship with the area, having delivered the Caton Court project and the Luneside student accommodation project and look forward to using our knowledge of green buildings and Passivhaus principles developed in previous schemes to deliver a highly sustainable project,” he said. said
The appointment was made under a pre-construction services agreement through the North West Construction Hub’s High Value Construction Framework.
Lancaster City Council Vice President Caroline Jackson said the selection of Eric Wright was a significant milestone in the plan to revitalize the area.
“A key ambition of the Canal Quarter masterplan is to breathe new life into this area of Lancaster by providing local residents and families with much-needed affordable housing,” he said.
“The council has appointed Eric Wright under a pre-construction services agreement to work with the design team under early engagement protocols, taking a major step forward in realizing the ambitious housing vision” .
The Coopers Fields project is being led by the council’s housing team, with Anderton Gables acting as project lead contract consultant and PRP as project architect.
