Founded in 1962 as an electrical repair and maintenance of CO. In Indianapolis, Ermco Inc., it has evolved from a small electric and family maintenance business in a power plant focused on the construction, electricity service and maintenance, low voltage systems, automation of buildings and energy management, as well as specialized facilities.
Working on capital projects in all the United States, the company’s company revenue grew to $ 331.92 million by 2024, from $ 243.8 million by 2023.
Looking back how it started, the first major Ermco contract was for the Indiana Fairgrounds Events Center in Indianapolis and has grown from there.

“We started doing his daily work and we have never left,” says David Peterson, president and CEO. “This is one of our basic customers.”
Peterson says that the company’s approach to low voltage and electrical automation automation, as well as providing continuous service and maintenance, is attractive to clients who appreciate the company’s unique services strategy.
“We call it the champion approach,” he says. “We can go to our customers and make them hit the easy button. We say yes, we can do a project for them. It depends on us finding out how to contribute the maximum value to meet their needs.”

Bigger projects of fuel growth
The company’s growth has been further promoted over the years, as it took on larger projects and greater challenges, starting with its relationship with Aecom Hunt in sports national places. This relationship involved more than 35 large-scale sports stages across the country, including Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, the Barclays Center in New York, the Toyota Center in Houston and Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, to mention some.
The market sectors that currently promote work for Ermco are sports/entertainment centers, health care and data.
“We started doing work at the data center almost seven years ago in San Antonio,” says Peterson. “We have just done a job of about $ 400 million in this project over the years. We are growing [that data center business] On a national level. “”
Another major recent project for Ermco has been the significance of Hilton, a 40 -story hotel of 800 rooms designed to be the highest hotel in Indianapolis. ERMCO applies strategies to improve processes and efficiency, including the doubling of all project power supply behaviors in an out -of -site manufacturing facility. This work, which used to consume a long time, has been provided by the technology that Ermco uses.

“We had to model the duct and take it physically,” says Adam Rude, vice -president of construction support services. “We now have accessories to our software that we model and add to the dimensions, and it will automatically turn to our manufacturing store depending on the type of seller we use.”
Describing the process, he says: “We have taken something that could have taken days or weeks to make an individual engineer and, through our software investment, take seconds.”
Rude says Ermco “pushes the envelope on technology and makes financial commitment forward to make it a hopes of being a leader of the industry.”
This investment releases engineers to focus on more complicated tasks that require a higher level of sophistication to perform.
“Automation is not here to take on our work; it is here to make it easier for us to focus on more difficult efficiency and tasks. I think this is what sets us apart from our competitors,” he says.

Customers prioritize technological solutions
Rude says customers also care about technology and if Ermco remains at the forefront.
“Much is presented in our scope reviews and project interviews,” says Rude. “Sophisticated customers are looking for contractors who are constantly driving the envelope in out -of -place manufacturing and manufacturing and improving efficiency, productivity and quality, which their projects are much softer.”
He adds that while many of Ermco’s projects are complex, “customers can sooner be put into operation, they can begin to generate revenue. They understand and appreciate this and sets us apart from many other electrical contractors in the industry.”
Using software to automate processes is also a way that Ermco is facing a scarcity of work throughout the industry.
“It’s hard to find the VDC now [virtual design and construction] Project engineers and managers, especially with the experience needed to do the things we are doing, “says Rude.” So we have technology to automate what was usually manual. “
Peterson agrees to have qualified employees who can enter and hit the ground. A way that Ermco seeks to overcome this obstacle is to make its construction sites attractive, offering services such as accessible parking, bathrooms, a comfortable place to eat lunch and a clean environment, not always common in active construction sites.
“This can include a heated or air conditioning coffee where workers can go to eat without waste time,” says Peterson. “Create an environment where your craftsmen should not sit in their car for lunch and will not waste 30 minutes or their break walking to the car park.”
He says these types of workers are important to attract and maintain employees.
“Everything is added,” he says. “If there are things we can do to help them, to make them feel comfortable and to maximize efficiency, we make creative and work as a team to do it.”
Ermco is also helping employees to see a long -term professional path with the company.
“What we are doing now is to bring together a secondary leadership program to really talk about the skills sets of our field and office field,” he says. “People who want to enter the office as a project engineer need to understand the way to become a project manager. And then, as a project manager, what it means to become an executive within the company. We are launching this curriculum and professional career to ensure that we offer those key formations for our people.”

Deal with increasing costs
Another challenge is to address the increase in rates related costs and an uncertain economic environment.
“Every day is evolving,” says Peterson. “ One day the rates are over; the next are going down. We have open and honest conversations with our construction management owners and management equipment to inform them of the problems. We acknowledge that it has the potential to cost -all the money. We do not think we should absorb -all. What we can do is manage this to control the cost at the end of the day. ”
Peterson says Ermco consolidates orders to manage costs.
“If we win three or four projects, now we can go to the copper manufacturer and say:” Well, we need x amount of pounds. Are there better ways to work together to manage risk? “”
As the Ermco grows, it has another office in Columbus, ind., It does not see the need to establish offices across the country.
“When we leave the city to make a project, we find a good strategic partner and we work with them to support the team. This helps with local relationships and local craft resources by work staff properly,” he says. “When the work is over, our local partner usually takes care of this client who manages the service work and identifies the next opportunity to bring value to a national project. We have been associated with work outside the city for more than 50 years.”
Although Ermco focuses on controlled growth, Peterson says he also works to identify where the industry goes and how this future can endure.
“We have a working group … that focuses on what they look like next three to five years in our industry,” he says. “How will it be affected by ai, robotics, manufacture, prefabrication, our pile of technology and all the technology we use, including 3D printing? What are the things we need to look differently and invest today?”
The implementation of these strategies is important for Ermco and its customers.
At the tip of the spear for our clients and trust us to help navigate this conversation in the right way, “says Peterson.
