Providence, Rhode Island-based Gilbane Building Co. broke ground March 21 on a new $410 million project that replace the current Cape Canaveral Hospital in Brevard County, Florida, the company announced.
Located on Florida’s Space Coast and barrier islands facing the Atlantic Ocean, the structure has been designed to withstand a Category 4 hurricane and will be built 13 feet above sea level to withstand waves of storm
Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, with the official opening of the hospital scheduled for early 2027, according to the release. Gilbane has partnered with St. Lawrence design firm Lawrence Group. Louis, Missouri, project management firm Concord Group of Chicago and engineering firm BCER of Golden, Colorado.
The new project will consist of a new hospital building and medical offices, according to the release. The 268,000-square-foot medical center will have 120 private inpatient beds, 25 emergency treatment rooms and six operating rooms. The office will be three stories tall and 92,000 square feet. An on-site central power plant will ensure a continuous power supply even during tropical storms and hurricanes.
The larger campus will also include a three-deck parking structure.
Other construction companies are also working on high-value healthcare projects. A McCarthy joint venture based in St. Louis and Texas contractor Vaughn Construction won a contract in February to build one $5 billion replacement pediatric campus in Dallas for children’s health, and a Turner Construction JV started building one $550 million hospital in San AntonioTexas in January.
