Glencar Construction has been appointed by port operator Peel Ports to build a warehouse at Alexandra Dock, within the Port of Liverpool development in Bootle.
The £28 million facility will occupy 22,000 square meters and span 400 meters in length. It will be used for cargo handling and storage at the port.
The facility is ready to store a variety of commodities and will have a dedicated dock and cranes to optimize vessel unloading.
The latest deal comes after it was revealed earlier this year that Glencar had more than doubled its turnover, placing it among the country’s biggest contractors.
The Hertfordshire-based company, which was formed in 2016 by ex-McLaren staff, saw its revenue rise to £417.8m in the year to 30 September 2022, up from 160, 4 million from the previous year.
The scope of works for the Port of Liverpool facility includes the design and construction of the warehouse, called the Alexandra Dock Multi User Warehouse. The works include piles, foundations, thrust walls, single span warehouse framing, cladding and deck lights.
Exterior paving and road construction for truck access and crane loading is also specified, along with the construction of exterior barriers, bollards, fences and gates, and an exterior vehicle wash area. In addition, office and wellness facilities will be created.
Work began on the site in April 2023 and is scheduled for completion in March 2024.
Glencar’s managing director for the Midlands and North, Peter Goodman, highlighted that “ports serve as a critical part of the UK’s supply chain, and multi-user facilities of this type contribute to the continued import and export of vital goods”.
He said: “Working with some of the UK’s leading asset managers, developers and occupiers, Glencar has developed a market-leading reputation in the delivery of industrial and logistics facilities.
“We understand the commercial imperative to produce high quality, sustainable structures, often at high speed, creating lasting value for asset owners, and we are delighted to be working for leading UK port operator Peel Ports to build this development of multi-user warehouses”.
Peel Ports Group Chief Operating Officer David Huck added: “We have seen a significant increase in demand for storage, and this huge new facility provides an opportunity for companies looking for a new base to grow their business, as well as allowing existing customers the opportunity to expand its operations in the port.
“This also represents a very important milestone for Peel Ports, enhancing both our warehousing and distribution offerings while enabling more sustainable and port-centric solutions that reduce road miles. We have long discussed the benefits of central location of the Port of Liverpool, and this new facility will also deliver real cost and supply chain benefits. The new state-of-the-art dry storage facility has been maximized for storage volumes, throughput of unloading and the short delivery times of the trucks”.
