Award: Bridge replacement project
Value: 157 million dollars
Location: Tucson, Arizona
Customer: City of Tucson, Arizona

A joint venture led by Granite Construction won a $157 million contract to expand and replace the 22nd Street Bridge in Tucson, Arizonaaccording to a new statement of January 15 from the contractor.

Watsonville, Calif.-based Granite will work with Evansville, Ind.-based Traylor Bros. to replace the current four-lane bridge over Barraza-Aviation Parkway and Union Pacific Railroad with an upgraded six-lane span, according to the news release. The team will also reconstruct 22nd Street from Kino Parkway to Tucson Boulevard.

The city of Tucson and the Regional Transportation Authority, an independent taxing district of Pima County, will fund the project, according to the announcement. The funding augments a $25 million grant awarded in 2022 through the federal DOT RAISE grant programwhat is now known as the BUILD program. The purpose of these grants, according to the US Department of Transportation, is to assist surface transportation infrastructure projects with significant local or regional impact.

For the work, Granite will supply 10,525 tons of asphalt from its upcoming Swan facility, according to the announcement. The supply of material and aggregate has been a focus for the builder as it seeks to strengthen its involvement in this side of the business.

“By combining Granite’s strong local resources with Traylor’s extensive experience in complex segmental bridge construction, we are well positioned to deliver a high-quality project for the people of Tucson,” Derek Betts, Granite’s vice president of regional operations, said in the news release.

This isn’t Granite’s only current bridge project. In October, the company began work $138 million Lake Street Bascule Bridge project for the Chicago DOT.
