The Washington Airports Metropolitan Authority (MWAA) has selected HOK to design a significant expansion at Washington International Airport Dulles in northern Virginia. Continuing the Development Development Program of Tier 2 of the Airport, which began last fall with the start of the construction of the initial phase of 435,000 square meters, the phase of 14 doors of Turner Construction Co., the project will add another 1,735 million square meters that includes 22 new doors for international flights and a new ease of federal inspection services of 176,000 square meters.

Hok will also design a new central utility plant for airport infrastructure, updates to ramps control systems and baggage handling services, and the initial section of 1.13 million square meters of an independent “level” enclosure. The Aerorata de Dulles will link the new facilities with the main terminal of the airport and other competitions.

Contests are part of an infrastructure investment package of $ 7 billion facilities that the airport expects to complete for the next 15 years. The financing for the initial section of $ 500 million, called Tier 2 (EAST) and planned for completion by the end of 2026, is partly provided a subsidy of $ 40 million awarded under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law of 2021.

Although Hok is scheduled to offer his design with an eye towards the construction of 2026, a spokesman for the MWAA says no program has been established to select a construction team.

Justin Wortman, a regional aviation and transport leader of Hok, says the expansion helps to place Dulles Airport for success for the next 40-50 years.

“It will improve Dulles’s air features, proof of the installation, improve their flexibility and create beautiful and open passengers that raise the traveler’s experience,” adds Wortman.

According to Hok, the expansion of Tier 2’s concourse will be perfectly integrated with the initial phase, ensuring a fluid and intuitive passenger experience that will provide clarity to passengers, especially those traveling abroad.

“As a gateway to the capital of the country, we want to create a high experience for both international passengers to arrive and to leave,” says Peter Ruggiero, Hok Design Director. He adds that throughout the prestige and expectations of Washington, DC and the region of the national capital, “we also incorporate current trends in international arrivals processing to streamline passenger flow and improve operating efficiency.”

To support Mwaa’s sustainability goals, Ruggiero says the HoK team will also identify the most effective design solutions that improve energy efficiency and resilience.

As the main axis of Metropolitan Washington for overseas flights, Dulles’s traffic has bounced off from the pandemic of 2020. Last year he saw the airport manage a record of 10.38 million international passengers, 11% increase compared to 2023. Currently, Dulles operates 113 doors, almost half of which are at a concourse c/d built more than 40 years ago and is expected to be temporary installation until permanent competitions could be built.

Even when the airport builds new facilities facing mid 21while Century Travel, Wortman says that the original building of the original terminal of the Finnish architect Eero Saarinen, opened in 1962, will remain a design stone.

“Our goal is to create the next generation of great airport architecture, learning from the principles of Saarinen while evolving them for modern needs,” says Wortman.
