Beginning Friday, November 3 at 11:00 p.m. until 4:30 a.m. Monday, I-405 southbound will be fully closed.
The closure begins at the I-405/State Route 167 interchange via SR 181 or West Valley Highway.
The Washington State Department of Transportation will demolish the Lind Avenue overpass, which was struck and damaged by a trailer carrying a backhoe in June 2022.
Specifically, “every other beam” was damaged, according to WSDOT communications consultant Tom Pearce.
Five out of eight beams were damaged.
WSDOT determined that replacing the overpass would be the most effective option.
“Replacing individual joists would mean we’d take one joist out, we’d leave one joist in place, and then we’d have to reach in and take out the next joist,” Pearce said. “So what happens is you’re putting in five new girders. They might not be completely level like you can get when you build a new overpass. Replacing all the girders was the best way to go.”
Between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. is when WSDOT expects the heaviest traffic in the Renton area, so Pearce recommends you try to plan your trip outside of those hours.
“We’re going to see backups on the streets of the city of Renton,” he said.
Detours include Talbot Road and Southwest Grady Way.
