Indonesian researchers examine a suspicious structural failure on an eastern Java boarding school who collapsed on October 5, killing at least 36 people and leaving more than two dozen missing.
According to East Java police, the Khoziny Islamic school prayer building yielded as the crews were concrete for a new upper floor. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said that the initial findings indicate the failure of the vertical supports and the existing foundation unable to withstand added loads of the ongoing expansion.
On suspicious structural load
Additional land had been added to the two -story structure when it collapsed, and police reports indicating that fresh concrete was poured into a quarter -level slab at the time of collapse.
“Preliminary tests show that columns and footings could not support the new loading route,” said a BNPB spokesman.
Basarnas’s rescue teams, Indonesia National Research and Rescue Agency, worked for several days in the midst of unstable waste, initially using manual tools to extract victims, passing to excavators after families accepted the use of heavy equipment.

National Police have sent victims identification teams to gather DNA samples and analyze dental records to verify the identity of many victims, most of whom were students.
While apparently no relation, a magnitude-6.0 earthquake outside the sea, at 12 km under the Java sea, registered on September 30 near Summep, 150 km from the school site, completed the rescue logistics destabilizing the rubble.
Officials have been careful not to link the seismic event with the failure of the building, reported the meteorology, climate and geophysics of Indonesia.
Engineering and supervision gaps
Indonesia has a long and documented construction history not allowed and informally supervised, particularly in quick urbanizing areas and with lower income. National regulators and international observers have repeatedly cited this pattern as a factor that contributes to the structural failures and the forces of the unequal code.
Officials have not confirmed if the vertical expansion was formally allowed. PUPR sent a forensic team to the site, but no technical finding has been published. The Faculties of Engineering of Surrabaya say that many Islamic boarding schools, known as Pesanren, are constructed with a limited professional design contribution.
“It seems to be a classic overload case of a non -verified frame,” said a civil engineering professor at the Bandung Institute of Technology, talking about local media funds. “When columns and foundations are only designed for original occupation, adding land without recalculating axial and shear capacity is the failure of the failure.”
The Ministry of Public Works and the Housing (LUPR) reported in 2023 that less than 20% of private and institutional buildings outside Jakarta had valid permits, and many heavy expansions came without licensed engineering.
Researchers are expected to review the size of the columns, the foundation support capacity and the concrete healing sequences during the discharge, along with a temporary sewing.
Religious Minister of Religious Affairs Cholil Qouumas, the agency that oversees school construction, has ordered immediate inspections of installations of several floors similar to East Java. It was committed to supervision and new audit procedures for private funding school projects.
The collapse of Sidoarjo is the deadliest structural failure of Indonesia during the years, highlighting the gaps of persistent application in half -height educational and religious construction.
Government officials said that it is expected that the PPR and BNPB forensical findings will guide reviews in the checks of compliance with the Indonesian construction code at the end of this year.
