Intel Corp returns the brakes at the speed of building two semiconductor manufacturers of $ 28 million in the center of Ohio.
Although no completed completion dates were announced for the project known as Ohio One, Intel’s CEO LIP-BU Tan, he said in a July 24 earnings call that “we will slow down the rhythm of construction in Ohio to make sure that the spending is aligned with market demand”.
He added that “based on the progress we have already done in Ohio we have the flexibility to accelerate our work as needed to meet the needs of the client.”
He also said that the company is canceling plans for the construction of manufacturing facilities in Poland and Germany, and will consolidate a planned plant in Costa Rica with the largest in Vietnam and Malaysia.
The company had announced in March that it was slowing down the rhythm of construction of the plants. At that time, Intel said that the first of the plants, known as Fabs, which is short for manufacturing installation, would be completed by 2030, according to the company.
The project, led by the general contractor Bechtel, includes 2.5 million square feet of buildings, including 600,000 square meters of clean production space.
Governor Mike Dewine said in a statement that Intel still believes will continue with the project.
“Intel has stated his commitment to Ohio, as the new leadership of the company makes adjustments to its long -term strategy,” he said.
In an annual report presented in the early 2025 of Ohio Development Department, Intel told officials that he spent $ 3.7 billion on the project at the end of 2024. In addition, the company assures that more than 6.4 million hours of work had entered the project to date. The crews have placed more than 200,000 C of concrete, installed 497,000 linear feet of underground duct, installed 98,700 linear feet of underground pipe and installed 24,500 tonnes of receipt.
The report also lists some of the companies that worked on the project by 2024. In addition to Bechtel, they include Barnhart Plant Services LLC, CTL Engineering Inc., Currie & Brown Inc., EMH & T INC., Geotechnical Consultants Inc., Gilbane, Linde Engineering North America, Lithko Contracting LLC, MWH-Kokosing Venture and Ssoe Gric.
The plan to build Ohio One was announced in 2020 when Dewine said that Ohio had won the project more than 40 states competing for it.
Describing the Intel path, Ban, who was appointed ninth CEO of Intel in March, said that “we must create a capacity smart and carefully in a calendar that meets the needs of our clients and supports the economy of our business. This approach is essentially different from the path we have been for the last four years.”
Also on the earnings call, Intel announced that it plans to say goodbye to 15% of its global labor force, which would win its number of employees from almost 109,000 to 75,000 at the end of 2025.
Bechtel did not respond immediately to a comment request.
