A man in his 40s has died from his injuries after falling from a height while working at Laing O’Rourke’s Oxford North Innovation District.
Police and ambulance services attended the scene at 10.15am yesterday (December 4) but the man died at the scene.
Work at the site has been halted following the incident. Thames Valley Police and the Health and Safety Executive are making on-site inquiries into the circumstances.
In a statement, Laing O’Rourke said: “We are shocked and upset by what has happened and have suspended work on the project.
“Police and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) are now at the scene and we are co-operating with their investigations.
“For now we are focused on doing everything we can to support everyone affected by this tragic incident, including the family of the deceased and our project team.”
The contractor was appointed last week to build phase 1a of the £700m innovation district. The construction site includes more than 90,000 square meters of laboratory and work space, 480 homes, a hotel, daycare center, cafes, bars and three public parks. It is expected to be completed in 2025.
The project is being developed by Oxford North Ventures, a partnership between Thomas White Oxford (the development arm of St John’s College, Oxford), Cadillac Fairview and Stanhope.
A spokesman for Oxford North Ventures said: “We are deeply saddened to hear the tragic news that a member of the construction team lost his life on site yesterday morning.
“Our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time.”
