McAleer & Rushe has won a £60m contract to transform a former bus station in east London into apartments.

Construction of the London Road development in Barking will start in November and is expected to be completed by June 2026. It will be part-funded by property investors Yara Capital and BeFirst, the urban regeneration arm of Barking & Dagenham Council.

The plan will consist of 196 apartments, 71 of which are classified as affordable and the rest are for rent. The building, ranging in height from nine to 22 storeys, will also include two ground floor retail spaces and two roof terraces overlooking Abbey Green Park.

McAleer & Rushe senior director Mark Diamond said: “We are looking forward to working in partnership with Yara Capital and BeFirst to deliver modern and sustainable homes in historic Barking town centre.”

Yara Capital Investment Manager Patrick Houghton said: “We are delighted to appoint McAleer & Rushe as our construction partner, who have the expert knowledge and experience in the residential sector, and together we are committed to delivering a regeneration plan that will make the municipality a great place to live, work and socialize.”

McAleer & Rushe has several other residential projects underway, including a £138m luxury scheme on London’s South Bank.
