As the only private university of the South South Conference, Vanderbilt faced significant pressure on raising its athletic facilities to remain competitive in the recruiting landscape. Thus, the university associated with Barton Malow and Populous to build the highest practical installation dedicated to the United States – people or professional – for men’s and women’s basketball teams.
Designed with apartments dedicated to each team, athletes have private access to the practice courts, changing rooms, lounges, movie theaters and coaches offices. Teams share fitness and training; Sports medicine; nutritional treatment; hydrotherapy; and social and dining spaces.
The construction took place at about 7 hectares in the heart of the campus, adjoining three different university athletic facilities, two hotels and a garage of the university. The installation is located in the area of the northern end of the football stadium. To house the small footprint of the installation, the area of the northern end was also renovated.
A great component of the renewal was the updates of utility infrastructure, including an aging of 87-in. Combined storm tube/sanitary sewer under the site. When the addition was complete, there would be no opportunity to address underground problems without a significant impact on the stadium reformed areas, so that the team had to anticipate possible problems. The construction team addressed the final structural design during construction reviews, working with the design team and the university to provide a long -term solution that would eliminate the need for future re -elaboration.
