Kirkland Hall, a landmark building on Vanderbilt’s campus dating from 1875, houses the office of the chancellor, provost, and other vice chancellors. One of Vandy’s five original buildings, it was first called the Main Building and contained all of the university’s classrooms and laboratories.
The building’s $46 million renovation, the first since 1988, included restoration of the masonry and terra cotta envelope, replacement of all exterior windows, and structural modifications. Crews also removed all interior trim and non-bearing partitions and replaced existing mechanical systems, electrical equipment and elevators.
In addition, the front and side entrances were renovated and restored. The rear entrance and stairwell were demolished and rebuilt. Other renovations included executive level offices, conference rooms, open office landing spaces, a catering kitchen, break rooms and restrooms. New additions include an AV suite with a video studio, voiceover room and control room.
Skanska used laser scanning, which gave all parties—Skanska staff, Vanderbilt University, Centric Architecture, SOM, engineers, and business partners—an opportunity to review a virtual model ahead of a traditional construction schedule . The shared model became a valuable communication tool during the pre-construction phase, improving alignment among the team.
The two-year project was completed under budget and on schedule in December 2023.
