The projects at the Cross and Winyah stations of South Carolina were designed to treat the combustion gas disulfurization effluents and to comply with the US EPA’s EPAs limitation guidelines for Arsenic, Selenium, Mercury and Nitrates. On December 31, 2025, the complete regulatory fulfillment was required to meet the strict limits, the project team designed and built two similar wastewater treatment systems in parallel and in a adjusted calendar.
At the beginning of 2023, Santee Cooper made the decision to operate its Winyah generating station through the date of the EPA for the cessation of coal energy generation. The decision doubled the project and left just over two years to engine for, acquire and build the wastewater treatment system in time to meet the period of compliance.
The crews led 5,090 piles of support for the Foundation and installed more than 11,000 C of concrete. The project also included 631 new teams, 300 tonnes of structural steel and more than 34,000 linear new pipe. The crews installed more than two kilometers of main HDPE underground strength pipes. The road crossed a railway in two places and passed under the existing storm drainage pipes. The team decided to say directional throughout the main line of force, which eliminated security concerns for open excavations and reduced the number of erosion controls needed. The strategy ultimately saved time and costs.
Despite the reduction of the time line, the $ 305 million project was delivered to the calendar and the budget.
