John Sisk & Son is in talks to build the £300m extension to Manchester City Football Club’s Ethiad Stadium. Construction news can reveal
The Premier League winners plan to add a 7,700-seat upper stand to the north stand of their east Manchester stadium. The proposed extension would also include a 3,000-capacity fan zone with food and beverage outlets, as well as a club shop, museum, office space and hotel.
Laing O’Rourke had been in advanced talks to build the scheme but walked away from the project last month after failing to reach an agreement. Manchester City Football Club subsequently contacted other contractors.
Sisk is already working on the preliminary foundations related to the project, however CN it is understood that the Irish contractor is also in advanced talks to deliver the entire project, subject to receiving planning permission from Manchester City Council.
Manchester City Football Club has previously said the project would involve “more than £300m invested in the east Manchester area”, although the value and type of construction contract is unknown.
An official announcement of the contractor is expected to be made in the fall, and work will begin around November. The works would increase the stadium’s capacity to 61,000 spectators.
The football club hopes to open the newly upgraded North Stand in August 2025, ready for the 2025/26 season, while it expects works on the hotel and public area to be completed by mid to late 2026
In 2014, Manchester City revealed plans to increase the stadium’s capacity to around 60,000, with the South Stand and North Stand to be expanded. However, only proposals to upgrade the south stand with a third tier have come to fruition so far, with Laing O’Rourke completing the 6,000-seater job.
Manchester City Football Club and Sisk have been contacted for comment.
