Global construction company Skanska is set to see major changes to the West Coast executive team of its US civil operations.

Mike Aparicio will step down from his role as executive vice president (EVP) of the West Coast region and assume the role of senior vice president (SVP) of operations as he transitions into retirement.

James Bailey will move into the role of EVP, and Ryan Clayton will be promoted to SVP, general manager. Their extensive industry experience and successful work at Skanska will help them step into their new leadership roles, building on their strong existing relationships with the community and partners. These changes will be effective in August.

“It is with mixed emotions that I share that Mike Aparicio will be transitioning into retirement,” says Don Fusco, president and general manager of civil operations for Skanska USA. “Mike has been a force in the construction industry and a great asset to our team over the past 15 years. Over the course of his career, Mike has built an incredible team that will lead us into the next chapter and I appreciate the opportunity to partner with him in this transition.”

In the SVP role that will take place in 2024, Aparicio will help facilitate a seamless transition focused on strategic planning and specialized tasks.

Aparicio joined Skanska in 2008, having been a force in the California construction industry for decades. Throughout his career, Aparicio has delivered vital infrastructure developments such as Expo 2 in Santa Monica that brings Angelenos to the beach, the Westside Purple Line extension in Beverly Hills, the Regional Connector Transit Project award-winning Downtown Los Angeles and the already iconic Sixth Street Viaduct that connects Downtown Los Angeles’ Arts District to the Boyle Heights neighborhood.

Bailey joined Skanska in 2009 and has successfully led teams to deliver superior performance on projects including the I-15 Express Lanes in Riverside, State Route 60 in the Badlands, and the Mid Coast Corridor in San Diego. In his new role, he will be responsible for overall operations as well as long-term strategic planning to ensure the success of the region.

Clayton will be promoted to the role of SVP, General Manager, after serving as SVP, Operations for the Northwest Region. Clayton joined Skanska Koch in 2001 and has since worked on several signature projects in the eastern and western United States, including the Manhattan Bridge, the Bayonne Bridge, the Transbay Transit Center, and the Lynnwood L300 link extension in Seattle, Washington. In his new role, he will oversee day-to-day operations, build on strong partnerships with customers and communities, and plan for the strategic growth of the region.
