North Carolina State University, also known as NC State, has come knocking Skanska to build a new integrative science building for STEM education and research, the Sweden-based contractor announced Friday.
The total budget for the project is $136.7 million, but a statement shared with Construction Dive said the contract totaled $106 million, which the company will include in its order books for the fourth quarter of 2023 .
The 165,000-square-foot facility will feature a cafeteria, classrooms, teaching labs, research spaces, study spaces and office areas. The project will support studies and research in chemistry, biochemistry and biotechnology, according to Skanska.
“This new facility will contribute significantly to NC State’s new Integrative Sciences Initiative and revitalize the Brickyard Tent, one of nine sacred sites on North Campus,” said Mark Balling, executive vice president of operations of Skanska construction in North Carolina and Virginia.
Skanska has worked with NC State before, building Fitts-Woolard Hall, an engineering building; the Golden LEAF Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center; the James B. Hunt Jr. Library; and Engineering Building III.
Richmond, Va.-based Moseley Architects will provide designs, and the project will seek LEED-Gold certification. Skanska expects to hand over the facility in September 2026.
