An architecture team spent almost a decade designing and redesigning a recreation center for a growing municipality of Pennsylvania, which eventually opted for a hybrid building of affordable heavy steel.
Structurecraft of British Columbia: Structural disk engineer and design superstructures for the $ 49 million project, he had the task of conceiving a long -term wooden building that would fit the project budget, a key concern for the upper municipality of Macungie.
“I have had this vision for some years now to see how we can create an economic and attractive hybrid steel/steel structure as an alternative to utilitarian steel buildings that the public has become accustomed to,” says Gerald EPP, president and chief engineer of Structurecraft.

The UMT community recreation center includes four interconnected buildings with a total gross area of about 188,000 square meters. The 133,000 -square -meter interior football installation is the largest of the four structures that includes two flexible gyms and an entrance/amenity building.

The manager of the Higher Municipality of Macungie, Robert Ibach, recalls when the municipality of 29,000 people decided to consider a massive wood design: “We took a final look at the steel and found that the cost of building the wood was competitive with the steel at that slightly higher time.”
Including four interconnected buildings, the recreation center with a total gross area of about 188,000 square meters. The 133,000 -feet interior football installation is the largest of the four structures that will include two flexion gyms with basketball courts and a service/lobbies building. The interior football installation includes the rubber walls framed with columns of glulam and glass glass. The buildings of the Flex gym are similar with rubber walls and Purlin-Punlin roof panels, and the lobby/lobby building includes a mixture of light wooden frame walls and glulam frames.
Located for its general completion next summer, the erection of the project superstructure began in April and will end by the end of the year.
“It has taken a long time to get here,” says Ibach. “Sometimes it seemed that nothing would be built.”

Minimize costs
In 2016, the city hired Howard Kulp Architects to create a design that did not look like another factory warehouse. The municipality wanted “ a combination of structural innovation, sustainability and a warm and welcoming community space that provides both function and beauty, ” says Nathan Moyer, a HKA5 project head -based in Allentown, which merged with Howard Kulp in 2024, and is now the design of the project’s design design and architect.
The municipality also wanted the center to serve as a milestone in the Lehigh Valley region, the fastest region and the third most populous region in the state, according to a report published by the municipality.
But to do all this within the budget of the municipality, the material costs had to be minimized. The team succeeded in designing a structurally efficient and long-term building that maximized the pre-assembly out of place to maintain the labor costs down.
René Visscher, a structural engineer of the structure and main projects engineer, says that the entire numerical control milling of wood connections was made outside the site. “The Glulam arrived with the CNC and the complete cut and most of the fixers and pre -installed connections,” says Visscher.
The completely manufactured Austrian Glam beams, columns and traffic of 50,000 feet, as well as 250,000 LB of structural steel members and 80,000 LB of steel connections received by the structure of their suppliers, were sent to the site, according to Visscher.

The websites and the columns of steel, all the wide bridha’s elements, were also manufactured mostly outside the site with upper and lower nucleus sections and submitted web, requiring “minimum fixation to the site” to minimize the work of the site, he adds.
Visscher claims that achieving stability throughout the long -term structure required optimization of the portal frame geometry. “In schematic design, we have explored a number of different structural options to reach a solution that is the most effective and structurally safe,” he says.
It says 280 feet, the higher agreements near the central duration, the lower agreements and the cords on the outer edges of the structure of the wooden steel portal frame to the base, are under a high compression, according to Visscher. To stabilize the nodes of the lower agreement with the pipe to prevent them from climbing outward, the team linked the four lower agreements and tied it to the building’s diaphragm.
Once the team built its parametric geometry model, Visscher spent a month exploring a series of geometric and structural options that are in accordance with work restrictions through finite element modeling software.
“I can explore geometry, structural behavior and a little real -time design to speed up the optimization process,” he says.
Ibach, the city manager, says that “the beauty of design” provided impetus for the project, which has received about $ 44 million in awarded offers and includes $ 750,000 in federal funds and $ 5 million from the state.
The project is also a look at the agricultural formation of the municipality with the Grands of German Pennsylvania and the built barns. “This building, in a small way, pays tribute to this story by replicating this style of construction,” says Ibach.

Hiring strategies
The dynamics of contracting and completion of the delegated design, which was 60% complete at the time of the offers, created important challenges, according to Kyle Collina, project manager of Butz Construction, the person in charge of the construction of the city.
Knowing the structure and the architect would be fine the design and some of the details would change as they advanced required the strategic volleyball to consider the impact of various deadlines subject to the approval of the city, along with the obtaining of the European Austria fir wood. The pre -construction time was key to managing this obstacle, as the wood needed a long departure time, so the team planned its start date and the milestones accordingly.
“Our pre -construction strategy was to have the project and the costs approved at a convenient mutual time in relation to the contracting/manufacture of heavy wood members,” says Collina, “including the consideration of the time of year that would reach the place for the installation.”
Collina says that the greatest obstacle is to tie to the metal panels isolated from the walls. The Butz Construction Team had to adjust the shop drawings between the Kingspan and Structurecraft metal board provider and make it narrow. Since Structurecraft was completed at the time of offers, the entire project team worked together to adjust the elements that interacted with the structure and solve these details to provide an envelope of the complete building.

Progress of the site
After a rainy spring, the crews are working to make up for lost time. Heavy wood frame is a full quarter for interior football installation, according to him. The construction of the roof is also underway with the installation of glulam purple with two plywood layers made and installed by Structurecraft crew.
“We will continue to pursue the structure, trying to make the climate of the building stronger possible, quickly following our work completed with the installation of the ceiling and metal desk,” says Collina, who works on his first structural wooden wood project. “I can see how this is a new thing in the region that will be unique to the community.”
Ibach is excited about the great contributions that the center’s recreation staff will provide to the residents. “There will be opportunities for all ages and skills to enjoy the installation and what is offered inside,” he says.
