The US Army Engineers Corps again seeks offers for the The opening phase of the project of modification of the Port of Some months after the cancellation of the initial contracting effort due to the unexpectedly high offers for the work. The three -phase project is intended for Expand the outer basin of the port of Nome while you create
The first port of the deep water of the Nation.

The original opening phase of the three -phase project called for an extension of the west causeway for approximately 3,500 linear feet, including 2,000 feet of pile of open cells, in the deep water basin with 22 tonnes armor stone. Corps officials have reduced the scope of the work and the updated request, the 1st phase called, now has 1,200 feet of extensions of causaway, 600 feet of open cell wharf and stone 18 tons armor, all with the removal of the existing spureful shoulder.

“The original complete construction of West Causeway’s original design is still our goal,” says USACE in a statement. “However, we are moving forward with a new phase of the project we call Phase 1a.”

A spokesman for the body tells Enr that a future phase 1b will provide the full construction of the West Causeway extension.

The project of Phase 1a, which is now a request with a period of April 14, has a expected date of the award of August 22. The USACE expects the project to range from $ 250 million to $ 500 million, below $ 662 million announced for the first phase that turned out to be too low to continue.

The number of offers and their amounts in the initial round, which was canceled on October 16, 2024, were not disseminated. At that time, the agency said it was “incorrect to say that the government’s estimation was unrealistic”, rather than the offers were higher than those planned. With approximately 90% of the funding of the federal government project and the remaining 10% of the city of Nome, government hiring laws do not accept 25% contracts on costs estimate.

The revised request reduces the size of the rock from 22 to 18 tonnes, part of the cost savings measures. The USACE Alaska District says that in a statement it has a high level of confidence that the design of modifications of the Port of the Nome will be resistant to the future weather conditions, even with the change and that the design of the project and the considerations of climate change have been incorporated according to the current guidelines.

Revised calendar

A spokesman for the city of Nome told Enr that he does not have a formal statement on the receipt, but said that the city is waiting for the project prize in summer 2025 with the construction of field from spring 2026.

An association of projects was signed between the federal and local government in January 2024, with the original plan to award a contract by the end of summer 2024 and begin construction in the spring of 2025. The delay in 2024 has promoted the start date about one year.

According to the new wording of the application, it is expected that the project will take 1,370 days from the notification. The design design design project is a price contract set by a company and the contracting process will use a better value selection procedure, taking into account the price and non -prices.

As part of the Phase 1 project, the 1,200 Longs extension in the existing causeway will have aggregates in layers and rock embankment protected by 18 tonnes armor stone. The Causeway extension will incorporate a road surface 30 feet wide and will include a 600 feet -length open leaf pile dock. The project still requires the removal of the 250-foot spur spark and the existing underline of the 22 tonnes armor and the B-Rock subsequent to the causeway nose. The contractor may choose to reuse the rocks of spur sparks.

The project will allow the port, also known as the Nome Harbor, to manage more ships at any given time and increase the depth of the port from 22 to 40 feet, enough to properly accommodate several vessels for trade, tourism and national security.

Continuing as a regional center located on the western coast of Alaska, the port of Nome was created in 1917 on the Seward Peninsula, adjoining Norton Sound. It is located 545 miles in the north -west of Anchorage and has no access to the main Alaska road systems. Government officials believe that the name, with a population of 3,500 inhabitants, offers a fundamental importance for the viability of the surrounding communities. The port also offers a launch point for ships heading to the sea lanes of Bering Strait.

A 40 -feet -deep water basin allows the port to house each US military boat smaller than a aircraft carrier. Nome mayor, John Handeland, had previously said that the United States needed a long time a deep water port to allow for the supply and supply of services to the National Security Fleet that operates in the Arctic.
