Turner Construction and AECOM Hunt are adding to their multi-sport construction portfolio with a $1.5 billion basketball and hockey arena in Philadelphia.
The couple that most recently joined in the next Cleveland Browns NFL Stadium build in Ohio got the contract to build a new one home to the NBA’s 76ers and the NHL’s Flyersaccording to a press release.
The duo will lead PACT+, a joint venture that also includes hometown firms Perryman Construction, Hunter Roberts Construction Group and Camfred Construction to build the new arena at the South Philadelphia Sports Complex, according to the release.
“Having Turner and AECOM Hunt on our team is a game changer as we work to build the most technologically advanced and fan-centric sports and entertainment venue in the world,” said David Adelman, apartment magnate, investor and 76ers co-owner, as well as chairman of the 76ers-Flyers partnership. “The knowledge this company brings to the project will ensure we are at the forefront of the next era of how fans experience live sports and entertainment.”
While the estimated cost of the arena was not listed in the press release, Adelman’s bio page for his investment firm Future Standard puts the expected price at $1.5 billion.
The announcement of the construction team marks a new path forward for the Philadelphia arena. The 76ers previously received the green light from the city council to build a $1.3 billion arena atop a SEPTA station in Center City. But the officials turned sharply to the location in South Philadelphia earlier this year, according to local news channel WHYY, after a lengthy approval process and vocal opposition from the community.
This places the planned arena in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex, the same part of the city as the stadiums of the NFL’s Eagles, which also built a JV Turner, the Phillies and MLB’s Xfinity Mobile Arena, the current home of the 76ers and Flyers.
“Designed to transform the fan experience for decades to come, this venue will feature state-of-the-art amenities for athletes, performers and visitors alike, setting a new standard in large-scale venue design and construction,” Jason Kopp, COO, AECOM Hunt Central Region, said in the release.
Beyond the Browns’ newly-branded stadium, New York City-based Turner and Indianapolis-based AECOM Hunt have extensive sports arena construction portfolios.
Between them, they have built Los Angeles SoFi Stadium i Intuit DomeState Farm Arena in Atlanta and New York Barclays Center. The couple is also currently working on the The new stadium for the NFL’s Tennessee Titans in Nashville, Tennessee.
In Orchard Park, New York, Turner is building the new Buffalo Bills stadium with Gilbane Building Company. Meanwhile, AECOM Hunt is working on the $1.45 billion renovation of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ EverBank Stadium in Florida, as a joint venture with Barton Malow.
South Philadelphia’s new multi-sport arena is expected to open in 2030, coinciding with the debut of an expansion WNBA team that will also play there, according to the release.
