California officials recently selected a design and construction team from Turner Construction Co. with DGA Architects for its $158 million Southern Region Emergency Operations Center, the contractor announced.
The news operations center, part of the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (OES), would complement the existing State Operations Center located in Mather in Northern California. The installation would do officials planning for or responding to disasters in Southern California; an area that includes Los Angeles and other cities with a total population of 22.9 million people.
The plan is to build the center on a 15-acre site in Costa Mesa, California. The facility would include two main structures, a 35,000 square meter office building and a 20,000 square meter support warehouse. The scope also includes several outbuildings, a 100-foot microwave tower and infrastructure improvements, according to OES.
Officials also envision the center achieving net zero energy. The facility will have solar panels, battery energy storage and emergency generators on site.
Construction is scheduled to be completed in 2027, according to Turner.
“This project represents an important step in improving community resilience and preparedness in times of need,” Turner vice president and general manager Reed McMains said in a statement.
