Rapid urbanization is creating demand for compact machines such as mini excavators, which can be used for multiple project applications. Continued acceleration of investment and execution is a major driver for faster growth. The Union Budget presented in February this year increased capital expenditure by around 35 per cent from Rs 5.5 billion to Rs 7.5 billion in the financial year 2022- 23. Capex spending has improved significantly, which is more than double FY20 levels. This will continue to drive the infrastructure sector. The increased volume of urban infrastructure projects has driven the need for efficient construction equipment, capable of handling multiple applications even in restricted areas. Mini excavators have emerged as the ideal solution for these requirements. It is witnessing constant demand for its accessibility to perform high-level excavation operations in confined spaces for varied urban and semi-urban construction applications. Mini excavators help with landscaping, excavation, demolition, pick and place, material handling and construction activities.

Contractors are hiring mini excavators because these machines can easily get into tight spaces. These smaller excavators can be transported easily and efficiently. During EXCON 2021, manufacturers believe the mini excavator market continues to grow faster with increased mechanization due to labor shortages and shorter project timelines. It has become very popular in the construction, housing and infrastructure sectors. The 3T class has seen continuous growth over the past two years. There is also a marginal contribution from the 5T class. Therefore, manufacturers are focusing on market needs and implementing technological modifications that respond to general demands. Since its inception, mini excavators have gone through a complete evolution and are being further modified due to the demand for customization. Different types of mini excavators used in projects in India are discussed below.

Mini excavator models

Mini excavator with Zero tail swing

The latest machines have a zero tail movement which gives these mini excavators a unique advantage for doing work even in very small spaces. It also features a swing speed control system and a hydraulic pilot control system along with a full rotation (FR) design. These mini excavators ensure high power, high efficiency and low running cost for customers’ construction, infrastructure, agriculture and utility equipment needs. Its compact design makes it easy to transport in conventional pick-up trucks and light mini axles. Ramp frame covers are also added to mini excavators for easy mud removal. All machine covers have a wide opening for direct access to service points and improved serviceability. Some of the other amenities the machines have are boom deflection, a modern canopy, an AC cab, for operator fatigue-free operation and self-diagnostic modules for easy service and maintenance. Mini excavators have a capacity of between 2 and 4 tons.

Mini excavator with blast protection structure

The latest mini excavator features include ROPS (Roll Over Protective Structure) cover, TOP guard, mandatory engine start locking lever and a convenient step for climbing. These features provide a safe working environment for operators. The models include an ergonomic positioning of the controls with 360 degree vision. and These mini excavators are designed to be used in a wide range of applications, including customers’ construction, infrastructure, agriculture and utility equipment needs. In addition, they are compatible with various accessories such as rock breakers, augers, etc. It also features an ergonomic operator compartment design for operator comfort. Advanced LS hydraulics, integrated power control and operating mode selection improve speed and performance while reducing fuel consumption. Its impressive properties include not only its power and strength, but also the precise response characteristics of the boom arm thanks to the sophisticated hydraulic system.

Mini excavator for difficult conditions and terrain

There are models available right now that provide high digging forces, stability and smooth control of work functions. Even with an optional heavy counterweight, the mini excavator offers just 280mm of tail overhang and is still compact, allowing the machine to work in tight spaces. This makes the machine an ideal tool for very demanding performance applications along with portability. The machine comes with a steel track and an optional rubber track depending on the conditions of the operating terrain. The long arm is again standard and offers great digging depth. The models are equipped with a smooth responsive hydraulic system that provides the level of control demanded by customers in multiple applications, from fine grading and dozing to filling. For the operator, the cab combines great visibility with a number of ergonomic features, including a left-hand control console that fully lifts and the ability to fully fold the pedals for increased footroom of the operator. It comes with standard features such as data link system.

Mini excavator for extremely confined work spaces

As spaces become more and more confined, carrying out excavation processes is becoming a difficult task. Mini excavators have emerged as the ideal solution and are witnessing constant demand for their accessibility to perform high-level excavation operations in confined spaces for varied urban and semi-urban construction applications. Models are now available with an innovative hydraulic system that makes this excavator fast, smooth, easy to control and able to navigate all types of terrain in the most compact spaces. The model features a zero-swing design for optimal maneuverability in tight workspaces. Standard features include thumb mounts, large dozer blades, hydraulic quick couplers for attachments and hydraulic-ready auxiliary piping. The spacious, ergonomically designed cabin reduces noise and increases comfort and visibility. The monitoring system provides the operator with machine status information, including the engine oil pressure light, battery charge light, engine coolant temperature and a fuel gauge. A centralized lubrication bank is available for faster and easier service and maintenance. For safety, the model is equipped with a double locking quick coupling that meets the latest safety standards.

Mini excavators with an advanced remote management system

The latest mini excavators include an advanced remote management system (EVI) as a standard feature and are specially designed for compact sites and slurried terrain. Its zero swing, boom swing and offset features provide trouble-free maneuverability in congested spaces. Standard connections provide many options for adding accessories for manufacturers for various applications. The intelligent control system adapts the pump capacity to the available engine power for greater efficiency and reduced fuel consumption. It also features an ergonomic operator compartment design for operator comfort. Advanced LS hydraulics, integrated power control and operating mode selection improve speed and performance while reducing fuel consumption. Its impressive properties include not only its power and strength, but also the precise response characteristics of the boom arm.

Mini excavators with One Pump Load Sensing system

The One Pump Load Sensing system on mini excavator models automatically adjusts hydraulic pressure according to load changes and reacts precisely to the movement of the control lever. Because the engine load is small, multiple tilting and composting operations can be performed while eliminating unnecessary losses of hydraulic flow. The zero-tail turn always keeps the tail of the mini excavator within the width of the track when turning, allowing operation in confined and confined spaces. The boom tilter allows digging directly close to a wall or building without repositioning the mini excavator. The easy-to-use digital panel features a one-touch operation button to view the time, hour meter and tachometer. Warning lights with code numbers on the display will alert you in case of emergency such as overheating, hydraulic problems or low battery. The automatic idle system helps to save fuel. When the control levers are in neutral for more than four seconds, the engine idles automatically. Move either control lever and the engine will immediately engage. This innovative feature reduces noise, exhaust emissions and running costs. The new V-shaped boom cylinder guard, plated in steel, prevents damage during loading.

Mini excavators with top mounted main lift boom

Modern models are now designed specifically with the rental and contractor segments in mind. Toughness is epitomized by the 173kg full-width solid cast counterweight that provides maximum protection to the rear of the machine. The heavy-duty H-frame frame offers rigid support and an open design that allows debris to fall easily to the floor preventing excessive component wear and minimal cleanup time. For maximum rigidity, the extendable undercarriage beams (from 980 to 1,330 mm) are constructed from 25 mm solid steel plate. The four-plate, high-tensile boom design offers maximum strength and durability. The 1,800mm main boom with a top-mounted lifting boom provides maximum protection to the hydraulic cylinder components.
