The Texas Health and Human Services Commission initiated the process new building of the Terrell State Hospitalan inpatient psychiatric facility that will serve North Texas residents, Gov. Greg Abbott announced in an Aug. 28 news release.
The general contractor for the project is Robins & Morton, based in Birmingham, Alabamajoined by New York City-based design firm CannonDesign, according to a press release from the builder. Abbott and the Texas Legislature approved $573 million in funding for the hospital.
The new 415,000-square-foot replacement hospital will have 275 beds: 175 non-maximum security, 50 maximum security and 50 adolescent beds, according to the release. Adult and adolescent patients will have separate living areas, and the maximum security unit will include strict security measures to ensure the safety of patients, staff and the community.
In addition, the facility will include state-of-the-art therapeutic spaces that align with evidence-based treatment, according to the press release. Individual rooms are designed to balance patient privacy and safety.

The original Terrell State Hospital, which opened in July 1885, has been in operation for nearly 140 years, according to the governor’s office. State officials expect the new health center to be completed by the end of 2027.
