The Colorado Convention Center Expansion Project is a 2024 Safety Excellence Award winner. The project also won the top honor in the Sports/Entertainment category.

ENR Mountain States previously announced its winners of the best projects of 2024. In addition to these main categories, the regional competition also has two special awards: Excellence in Safety and Excellence in Sustainability.
An independent panel of safety experts considered many factors in their decisions, including a project’s overall safety program, OSHA recordable incident rate, lost time accident rate, and total work hours at work Thanks to this year’s safety judges Daniel Milinazzo, Director of Health and Safety, Hensel Phelps Construction; Matt Ogle, Director of Safety, JE Dunn Construction; and Rick Zellen, Assistant Vice President and Principal Risk Engineer, Zurich North America.
Here are this year’s safety excellence winners, by subregion.
Colorado/Wyoming/Dakotas
Best project, excellence in security: Expansion of the Colorado Convention Center, located in Denver. Presented by Hensel Phelps
Merit Award, Excellence in Security: Maybell Diversion Restoration, located in Maybell, Colorado. Submitted by JHL Constructors
Intermountain (Utah, Idaho, Montana)
Best project, excellence in security: Big Sky Tram Dock, located in Big Sky, Mont. Presented by Baker Construction
Each of ENR’s 10 regional editions also brought together a separate set of judges to determine the region’s most sustainable projects. For Mountain States, the judges were Matt Schlageter, director of civil engineering, Martin/Martin; and Tim Springer, civil infrastructure manager, PCL Construction. Here are the winners:

Merit Award, Excellence in sustainability: Denver North Water Treatment Plant, located in Arvada, Colorado. Presented by GBSM

Best project, excellence in sustainability: Utah Clean Energy Climate Innovation Center, located in Salt Lake City. Presented by Oakland Construction
Award for Merit, Excellence in Sustainability: Waterford School Science Building, located in Sandy, Utah. Presented by Oakland Construction
All winning project teams, as well as our Homeowner of the Year, Design Firm of the Year, Contractor of the Year, Specialty Contractor of the Year and Legacy Award Winner, will be celebrated in Salt Lake City on December 10 at the Marriott Downtown. in City Creek and Denver on December 13 at the Embassy Suites Hotel Denver Downtown Convention Center.
