This $153.5 million effort replaced 52 miles of lane pavement from Wheatland Avenue to Interstate 5. The comprehensive initiative aimed to improve the longevity of the infrastructure by providing a minimum service life of 40 years

The project team placed approximately 160,000 cubic meters of fully articulated concrete pavement over the nearly four-year duration of the project, reaching completion in April 2024.

The scope of work included the rehabilitation of entrance and exit ramps, connectors, adjacent shoulders, overhead signal structures, traffic loop detectors, center barriers and the guardrail system. Improvements have been made to the highway lighting system, traffic signals on the ramps, and the improvement of existing curb ramps to meet ADA standards.

Rainwater treatment devices were also incorporated to remove trash from storm drains, showing a commitment to environmental sustainability.

Meanwhile, an unprecedented concrete shortage occurred in the middle of the project. To ensure availability of material for paving operations, which was sometimes not known until hours before work began, the team collaboratively identified alternative suppliers and coordinated rapid owner approvals. In total, four additional suppliers were approved and used to ensure the necessary materials were available for each of the ramp closures 45 days before work began, preventing cost and schedule overruns.
