Ten acres of previously vacant industrial property has been transformed into green open space, a public plaza and 1,400 linear feet of waterfront as part of this $51.9 million project. A footbridge connects the boardwalk to other new features, including an observation pier, floating landing and a children’s playground.
The scope of work included the realignment of Water Street, including underground facilities, and the reconstruction of the seawall at berths 182 to 186, including the installation of a steel pile wall. Crews also completed asbestos abatement and lead remediation in 10 buildings, rebuilt rock revetment, placed tidestone and installed prestressed concrete piles. The project team adopted low-impact development, installing various seepage basins, bioswaves, vegetation and permeable pavers throughout the project. These elements minimized stormwater runoff and promoted groundwater recharge. All of the project’s multiple phases and milestones were delivered on time and without any impact on the planned opening date of February 2024. Although some parts of the project were delayed by the pandemic, the project team developed solutions to avoid these delays to ensure critical project deliverables were completed on schedule.
