Sent by: JCJ Architecture

Owner: University of Connecticut

Main design: JCJ Architecture

General contractor: Turner Construction Co.

Civil Engineer: Lang

Structural Engineer: Macchi Engineers

MEP Engineer: CMTA

Ice Systems Engineering: B32 Engineering Group

The 97,300-square-foot University of Connecticut men’s and women’s hockey arena includes an ice-level lounge with cafes and an upper-level club with seating, a bar and expansive views.

The structure also includes training facilities, equipment rooms, advanced locker rooms, a hydrotherapy area, strength and conditioning rooms, a discus shooting room, coaches’ offices and a press box. Revisions during construction included exterior metal panels.

The 2,600-seat arena is targeting LEED certification and meeting Connecticut’s High Performance Building Standards. It has electric ice coatings, ecological materials and water saving technologies. Mitigation of subsoil conditions consisting of loose peat and solid rock included real-time logging using construction management software as well as performance testing. This optimized the stabilization process, enabled data-driven decision making and omitted unnecessary piers based on ground conditions.

The complexities of the prefab seating bowl and concourse-to-deck slab installation sequence were solved with a custom stadium form manufactured in Oregon.

The $58.7 million project was completed in 30 months on budget and on schedule.
