Located on the banks of the Berkley River in downtown Kansas City, this $120 million project spans seven acres. The world’s first purpose-built stadium for a women’s professional sports team, the 11,500-seat stadium was completed in time for the KC Current’s home opener in March.
The project’s location adjacent to the Missouri River required extensive coordination with the US Army Corps of Engineers. In establishing the elevation of the playing surface, the design team considered potential groundwater and variable river elevations in the design of the subsurface field and air drainage systems.
In addition to coordinating the plot design and fluctuating river conditions, a 54-inch diameter concrete storm sewer line was uncovered, extending from one corner of the site to the other. Because this line had to remain in place and active, crews carefully installed the auger casting pile base for the grandstand bowl structure.
The piles were strategically placed around the sewer pipe and in many cases bridged it. The project team also had to coat the pipe to ensure its future performance. The facility is equipped with 180 REC Pure-R solar panels, which are estimated to produce approximately 100,000 kWh of energy annually, along with additional solar panels on top of the front door entrance and storefront. team Where possible, locally sourced, low-emission materials were chosen and low-maintenance native plants surround the stadium to reduce water consumption.
