This offshore liquefied natural gas import terminal in Santa Catarina, Brazil, began earlier this year to produce 15 million cubic meters per day, half for local use, filling an energy security gap after Bolivia was capping its supply in the region by 2022. With a lighter-than-air density, LNG is considered a cleaner alternative to oil and coal for consumers and for regional manufacturing sectors, he says the team
To execute the project, the team used horizontal directional drilling for its 20-in. day, 33 km of offshore pipeline that also connects the terminal to the wider Brazilian gas market, in what is the largest application of the technology in Latin America, among the approaches used to overcome difficult terrain and reduce the impact of ecosystems.
A diverse transport fleet boosted the mobility of workers, with no accidents in the 6,000 km traveled per month on average. The project was completed on budget but behind schedule due to changes approved by the owner, the local unit of US-based New Fortress Energy.
