Eli Lilly will invest tens of billions of dollars in the manufacture of North -American medicines in a significant extension of the plans that the Indianapolis company had already described as historical.

Lilly, who causes the popular Zepbound obesity medicine, previously pledged to spend $ 23 billion when building and reforming factories in the United States to eliminate new pills and injections from the company. On Tuesday, the company doubled that goal. Including the commitments made since 2020, he hopes to pour over $ 50 billion to the capital of the United States.

According to Lilly, the expected spending is the largest pharmaceutical investment in national manufacturing in the last decade.

The $ 27 billion in a new investment will be used for the creation of four medicine production facilities, three of which will make the active pharmaceutical ingredients in the industry import regularly from abroad. Specifically, Lilly said his investment would help resist “the critical capacities of the chemical synthesis of small molecules”. Fourth place will support the company’s overall manufacturing network for injectable therapies.

In general, Lilly hopes that the four facilities will occupy more than 3,000 technicians, scientists and other staff, as well as create about 10,000 construction jobs.

Lilly announced his plans at a press conference in Washington, DC, six days after the company’s head, David Ricks, along with his fellow CEO at Pfizer and Merck & Co., met with President Donald Trump at the White House. According to Bloomberg, Trump warned executives that his industry could face the rates if they did not move their manufacture in the United States last week, Trump said he would impose tariffs “in the 25%district” on pharmaceuticals, among other property.

In a statement, Ricks said that the company’s decision to invest more in the domestic manufacturing capacity reflected his sentence in his drug pipeline. But his statement also included an economic message: “Our confidence positions us to help invigorate domestic manufacturing, which will benefit workers’ families and increase medicine exports in the USA”

Ricks also requested an extension of tax cuts approved in 2017 during Trump’s first term, calling Lilly’s national investment. In addition to decreasing corporate taxes, this law also reduced the rate to which the profits obtained abroad would be taxed on the repatriation in the United States, especially helping drug makers.

Lilly and the pharmaceutical industry are expecting similar benefits from this administration, as well as reviewing a Biden law law that for the first time allowed Medicare to directly negotiate drug prices. However, winning Trump’s support can be harder. For Bloomberg, Trump did not pledge to make changes in his meeting with Ricks last week and manifested dissatisfaction with the highest drug costs in the United States versus abroad.

Zepbound’s commercial success has played an important role in motivating Lilly’s manufacturing expense. The company initially struggled to continue with the demand, only recently resolved that they had opened the door to compose pharmacies to make off -brand copies. The investments announced above in Indiana and Wisconsin aimed to expand the production of Zepbound and drugs like this.

Lilly has not completed the locations of the four new factories yet. The company is currently in negotiations with several states and hopes to announce future locations this year. It forecasts that new facilities will start drugs for patients within five years.

Prior to 2022, Lilly promised $ 1.4 billion in annual capital expenses. Expenditure increased to $ 3.45 billion by $ 2023 and $ 5.06 billion last year. Analysts expect Lilly Sales, who reached $ 45 billion by 2025, will grow substantially in the back of Zepbound drugs and the successor obesity that the company is developing.
