Despite repeated delays, the southern coast of the coast of the Massachusetts Bay coast is again in service after more than 65 years.
The service, which began on March 24, connects Boston with Taunte, New Bedford and Fall River: the three large cities less than 50 kilometers from Boston that had no commuter rail access before, according to the MBTA.
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey (D) said that the project will help relieve traffic jams and to provide shorter journeys.
“After years of delays, we took this challenge and handed over to the southern coast and will benefit our entire state,” Healey said in a statement. “The start of the railway service will give people more options on how to move, where to live and where to work.”
Originally established for completion in 2023, note MBTA Records, the project was delayed during system tests. The final station was completed in the fall of 2024.
General Manager of MBTA Phil Eng said in a statement that the project launch date helped the team to compromise more )resources and attention “to make the line more )reliable on the first day of service and beyond. “”
Eng noted )These projects are highly specialized and complex, which require specific experience, and the system testing phase is one of the most difficult aspects to ensure the perfect integration of all components. “”
The MBTA did not comment if no penalty was evaluated.
The project expanded the Middleborough Railway of Middleborough, placing more than 17 miles of new court along the main line of New Bedford and almost 12 kilometers of new track along the secondary line of autumn.
)The project also modernized more than seven kilometers from Middleborough’s secondary court, from Pilgrim Junction to Cotley Junction, built two new disposition facilities and built six suburban railway stations, Rodalies,, Says Lisa Battiston, spokesman for Mbra.
The MBTA awarded the first phase, the first of two South Coast Rail construction companies to Skanska Dw White Joint Venture in May 2020 for $ 159 million. In August, the agency granted SCR Builders, a joint company of the Middlesex Corp. and Tutor Perini, a $ 403.5 million contract to modernize Middeleborough’s secondary line and build the signal and communication system for the first phase of the project.
The second phase of the project, known as the “Complete Construction” phase, continues to develop, according to Battiston, and will include a more direct and environmentally friendly journey in Boston, with more seasons, including one in the Brafting Hunting of Fall River.
“The MBTA is currently focused on the delivery and maintenance of the current levels of the South Coast rail service”, Battiston He says. “We plan to review the full creation option in the future, which will be informed by the operations of the first phase.
