The good news? The number of serious injuries and victims in the construction decreased by 17% by 2023 compared to the previous year.

“ Bad news is in a macrolevel in all industries, although delay measures, such as registered rates and lost time rates, have been constantly reduced from where they have been historically, for the last ten years, Duan Duhamel, Health, Safety and Sustainability Director of the Dallas Management and Contractorist Advancement Consultant and Sustainability Director.

A new ISN report Provides an analysis Of these incidents, known as Sifs, of the OSHA records of the customers. The report analyzes SIF data from 2017 to 2023.

The plate in all the highlighted industries for Duhamel is especially true in construction. It Industry mortality rate has increased About 10 deaths for jobs per 100,000 full -time equivalent workers for more than a decade.

The transfer of vehicles, working from heights or in tight spaces, making contact with equipment and electrocution, make the workplace a dangerous place.

“The construction industry is what we would call a high -risk industry in general because it has many mobile parts of the workforce and overlap with contractors and subcontractors all the way,” said Duhamel. “This introduces great complexity when it comes to security culture.”

The ISN report emphasizes the importance of organizational security culture in reducing incidents in the workplace. Duhamel said that the work done by construction research groups and security leaders have improved the process of thinking about prevention, training, controls and danger evaluation.

“I am optimistic that this will help move the needle in time due,” he said.

Safety assessments

Organizations that use a solid safety evaluation program are usually those that have lower siphs according to Duhamel.

Those who have an underway to evaluate the dangers allow the company’s influential to turn these evaluations into measurable actions that create a change for the better, said Duhamel.

“There is a direct correlation with a strong health and safety culture that leads to the likelihood of decreasing the SIF,” he said.

That is why one of its greatest recommendations for construction companies is to evaluate the security culture to establish a reference line where there are possible gaps in the organization.

“Employees will tell you what they see and believe and how things really are,” said Duhamel. “In addition, focusing really on these high consequence events and ensuring that there are appropriate controls to protect them and look at the human performance of why people make mistakes and what can be improved.”

Although Duhamel said that the number of SIF cases in the construction industry has declined since 2022, more must be done to better mitigate the dangers.

“There are many obstacles and struggles with safety in the workplace in the construction industry in general, and I think technology can help with this,” he said. “There are things that can afford humans to err and failure safely, such as the detection of vehicle accidents, improved barriers and protection systems that prevent an employee from falling and introduce technology and drones that can be detected dangerous conditions. Capturing some of them is really vital to the nearby iteration of Sifs prevention.”
