Jennifer Mahan knows that, as a young black female resilience engineer, deeply involved with initiatives of diversity, equity and inclusion in the construction industry, this is his time to really talk about the problems he cares with more passion, without feeling willing to spoil this burden or not.
Mahan also wants other engineers to do the same.
“Many engineers are stereotyped as timid and calm introverts, but unfortunately we have to do much more proponents than we have historically.” She says. “It is also a challenge for our industry: we have to do more at times like these.”
Specializing in mitigative designs for climate change and tensions and in research and evaluations after loss, Mahan is an expert in synthesizing research, geospacial data, and information on the post-streek crowd. In an age when people do not listen or respect experts, they say they will still go to engineers in times of crisis, in the face of natural disasters and realize that climatic regulations to gobound could be a bad idea. “This is what reassures me,” he says.
With experience in the design and analysis of the construction code, Mahan leads teamwork in performance -based flood barrier tests. This seems beyond reference codes to identify barrier strategies that meet resilience, as they quickly recover after a flood or maintain continuous operations.
Mahan encourages technical professionals to be proactive in offering solutions.
“I think a solution not often preferred is our voice, but it is a thing that we have to feel more comfortable with,” he says. “We know information, we understand the impact. It is not only our duty, but also our privilege to share this information.”
But it is as much as you say something as you say. Mahan stands out. When he tries to convince an owner to design for future flood levels, he says he could point out that the owner on the side has already been built to this level “so it would be good to at least fulfill this.” MAHS NOTES: “Climate … does not stop on a property line, so at some point you have to start thinking bigger.”
Mahan has been the coordinator of the New York Chapter of Women@TT, a network of employees who strives to achieve gender equality and is a founding member of the Talent Talent Consortium of Pipeline Engineering Diversity for Pipeline Talent Engineering, supported by his businessman and other companies in the industry that will defend colored university students.
She calls the Trump’s administration’s attack on Dei “protruding”, making her realize that she has given privileges such as entering a school based on her merit that the previous generations did not have.
But he also believes that it is important not to sound too virtuous when explaining why the Dei programs are so important. Making people feel included is not the diversity for the sake of diversity, but it is about retaining talent, according to Mahan.
“There is a real risk of losing great talent if the burned people feel that they are more appreciated elsewhere,” he says. “Personally I have seen it in my own experience.”
Mahan says he has worked on various teams, which maintains “all of us who are questioned, and question any of our own cases, without rest,” Oh, this is how we always have done things. “
She is worried that companies that make Dei correctly run their programs for fear of the retaliation of the Trump administration. But companies that have already taken root in their culture will only use a different language to encode their initiatives without “mainly changing their operation,” insists Mahan.
Mahan, who is involved with his church in Harlem and volunteers for park cleaning in the mainly undervalued communities, says that this is not the whole “doomsday day”.
She says that resilience in sustainability is “a beautiful opportunity” to “build societies and communities that benefit and work for the communities and societies we want.” Green infrastructure and passive design and new technologies and research to re -connect water passers are safely “is such a beautiful and exciting way to look at things in a more integrated design process than what we have done historically, adds Mahan.” So I’m really hopeful they see that this type of design approach really creates more habitable and pleasant communities. “
Mahan takes the strength of the knowledge that the generations that took place before their duration and survived in terrible time. “There has been this conversation that our generation begins to see some of the recent privileges slightly stronger than we had realized,” he says.
