Skanska, in a joint company with Flatirondragados, won a $ 1 billion design building contract from Virginia Passenger Rail Authority to deliver the first phase of the Long Bridge North Project in Washington, DC. Issuing issuance to proceed this month.
The work will replace the aisle of two tracks existing with a new alignment of four tracks that covers approximately 1.6 km, tie to the current three -track system in the north of the intertwined Enfant and set the stage for the fourth track under a later contract.
“The boundaries of the project are not extended to the intertwine, but will be included in the existing three -track system,” said Maritza E. Ferreira, Skanska Vice President of Communications. “The fourth track will be tied under another package.”
Under a progressive design model model, the Skanska-Flatirondragados JV will build seven new railway bridges and associated pedestrian paths.
The additional elements include the installation of continuous welding railway, modern signaling and extensive track updates of track bed, including resistant fixation systems to reduce vibration in adjacent parks.

Among its sustainability measures, the team will specify the weather steel for all structures “to achieve aesthetic goals and eliminate the need for coatings,” said Ferreira.
The stone recovered from the existing substructure will be re -collected as a coating in new elements. The car parks will have perverse flooring and best management practices to limit rainwater runoff, and construction water will be treated and recycled to curb waste and discharge from wastewater.
Skanska said he would use material assembly gardens and truck marshal areas to minimize the railway runner’s footprint, reduce impacts on existing traffic patterns and house large -scale community events throughout the alignment.
Construction teams are planned to mobilize this month, coordinating -closely with CSX Transportation, Amtrak, Virginia Railway Express, Washington, Dept. Dept. Transportation, National Park Service and Federal Railway Administration to minimize interruptions in passenger and goods services.
This northern package is the first of two under the Long Bridge project. A southern package, which pledged a new river crossing of two tracks, plus a combined bicycle scope, was awarded by a separate joint company by 2025.
The two phases will be double capacity through the Potomac river, relieving a critical look at the northeastern railway corridor.
Ferreira said that a substantial completion in the fourth quarter of 2030 is expected.
