Cardiff Council has approved plans for a 35-storey residential building, which will become the tallest tower in Wales.

The 364-storey tower will be developed by Rightacres and will feature ground floor retail as well as community space and a separate pavilion building which could be used as a cafe or restaurant.

The tower will be built on Wood Street in Central Square, close to Cardiff Central Station, HMRC offices and BBC Wales headquarters, after it was approved at Cardiff’s planning committee this morning ( June 8).

A planning report on the scheme recommended it for approval despite some outstanding issues.

The overview document, written by the council’s planning officers, acknowledged that issues remain with regard to the overall “planning balance”, noting that “the developer has not been able to respond positively to all the concerns identified”.

These concerns related to the total number of units not meeting the BRE daylight and sunlight tests and the impact on natural light from neighboring buildings, the lack of balconies, the lack of communal spaces with a better distribution between plants and the close relationship. with the neighboring places.

“The development cannot meet all financial obligations either,” but the “importance of this development as part of the Central Square development” outweighs the deficiencies identified in the plan, the report added.

The 113 meter high tower block will take the title of tallest building in Wales from The Tower in Swansea which is 107 meters high.

Rightacres’ plans for the Wood Street site in Cardiff were unveiled in 2021, but since then its height has increased by five storeys and the number of proposed apartments increased from 330 to 364. There are also ‘has relocated half a meter further north.

The fully glazed base of the building has been increased from 5.6 meters to 10.8 meters, while the colonnade of the east elevation has been increased from 5.6 meters to 17.8 meters in height and from 4.2 meters to 7.2 meters wide “to offer better viewing. ‘wayfinding’ connection from the central square… towards Gate 5 of the Estadio del Principat”, states the summary of the planning.
