A joint company has reached a substantial completion of the $ 450 million Tunnel Tunnel Howard Project in Baltimore almost two years before the original date of completion, according to a press release of September 30.

Sweden Skanska’s developer and builder and the Middle Atlantic Fay infrastructure firm formed the JV to deliver the modernization and reconstruction project of the CSX railway tunnel. Fay is a subsidiary of S&B Usa Construction, based in Pittsburgh, the construction arm of Shikun and Binui, a worldwide real estate firm based in Israel.

In expanding the authorization of the tunnels to allow double -stack trains, the work sought to help the CSX capital improvement initiative in the railway corridor between Baltimore and Philadelphia. The updated infrastructure artery will help improve the efficiency and capacity of the freight railway along the half -Atlantic hallway and midwest destinations, according to the statement.

The project is originally planned in August 2027. All that is left is the construction of a detention pond and the start of the bomb station on the West Portal of the Tunnel, Michael Goetz, responsible for Skanska projects at work, told Construction Dive by email.

The contracting team attributed the accelerated construction to use a progressive design delivery method, which offered flexibility, optimized design and costs reduction. The crews worked a schedule of 24 hours for seven and a half months, according to the statement.

“The progressive design of design design created a strong collaboration between the owner, the contractor and the designer, allowing the team to balance priorities and methods of construction,” said Goetz. “The calendar improved even more when CSX Green lit a continuous tunnel interruption for construction.”

The construction equipment needed to increase the disposition of the tunnel of 8,700 feet in length by 2 feet without damaging the original arch of 1895. To do so, the crews demolished and excavated the original soil by means of a tailor-made rail hut, which moved and fixed almost 1,200 slabs invested in prefabricated concrete, every 18-19 feet of distance, to form the new floor.

The progressive design delivery method also allowed the JV to try and perfect his plan to lower the tunnel floor while underway, according to the statement.
