Plans to build a new home for the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers and the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers took a step forward with the announcement by the Turner, AECOM Hunt joint venture, called PACT+, the team includes Philadelphia firms Perryman Construction, Hunter Roberts Construction Group and Camfred Construction.
The project, currently called “New Arena,” is slated for a 2030 opening at the South Philadelphia Sports Complex, a date tied to the debut of Philadelphia’s WNBA team, which will be a third tenant in the building.
The PACT+ team will work with team owner David Adelman and the design team of Populous and Moody Nolan to bring the project forward.
“This is more than a construction project, it’s an opportunity to build something that will become part of the fabric of Philadelphia for generations,” Dave Kaminksi, Turner’s senior vice president and general manager, said in a statement. “As someone who calls this city home, I couldn’t be more proud that Turner is helping shape a landmark that will bring people together and celebrate what makes Philadelphia such a special place.”
Turner and AECOM Hunt have more than 50 years of stadium and arena construction experience and have worked together for more than 20 years, including on several projects in Philadelphia and the NFL stadium there, Lincoln Financial Field.
Adelman said in a statement that having Turner and AECOM Hunt on a team will help “build the most technologically advanced and fan-centric sports and entertainment site in the world.”
Adelman originally had plans to build a new rink downtown, but announced the switch to the South Philadelphia site in January. No renderings or design details have been released.
